The internet is accessible to almost everyone in our society today. That means that people from around the world, of all ages, and of all identities share and connect through the internet. As a result, we must be responsible when we are on the internet and must always engage respectfully. Three concepts that I expect all of you to be well acquainted with are the ways to avoid cyber-bullying, plagiarism, and know how to check credibility.

Plagiarism is considered the usage of somebody else’s words, ideas, or work and claiming it as your own. It is a very serious offense that will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade. Plagiarism often occurs accidentally by students who quote a source without proper citation. That is why it is essential that each of you learn how to properly cite each source you use, even in the smallest assignments. Another form of plagiarism is directly copying off somebody else’s work. Sharing answers with peers is considered plagiarism and will result in all participants receiving a failing grade.

Credibility is another key topic to pay attention to when using the internet. Since so many people have platforms to say whatever they please, often times, it is not factual or credible. When using sources, especially secondary sources, we must check the author’s credibility by using proper sites and databases that offer us peer reviewed and reliable material.
